Joel takes you on a tour of Austin, and shows you just how much you can actually do in a single day. He kicks off his day with a cup of coffee at Fair Bean Coffee, with a cup brewed by a Deaf barista. Then he heads to the Texas School for the Deaf and tours the school museum, chronicling the history of the school since 1856. For lunch, he eats the best burgers in Austin at Hut’s Hamburgers before taking a swim in the Barton Springs Pool. Joel visits one of the things that truly keeps Austin Weird, the Cathedral of Junk where one man’s trash is truly another’s treasure. Then Joel heads to the river with Austin Paddle Sports where he paddles a Stand Up Paddleboard. For dinner, eat a slice of authentic New York Pizza at Home Slice Pizza before taking a Segway tour of downtown Austin. There’s no better way to wrap up a wonderful day than to head to see the Congress Bridge Bats, where millions of bats fly out from under the bridge at sunset. There’s so much to do in Austin, even a single day doesn’t begin to cover them all. Enjoy A Day in Austin with Joel Barish!

  • Thanks, Joel for showing me the other side of Austin! Is it true that Austin is the 2nd largest deaf community in USA? Oh Joel from this video it shows that you had eaten pure American foods such as coffee & chocolate for breakfast, long horn beef for lunch, and pizza for dinner. Hope you did not gain more weight from that day! Go back to Europe and get thinner! Haha- Well, as usual, I do enjoy viewing your videos. Always been entertaining!

  • Hi Joel,

Thanks for sharing the opportunity with us to share about TSD. We are fortunate to be in the prime location of Texas, which is Austin and we call it a vibrant city! TSD is a big bonus to this.

The stories about TSD history have been passed on to a lot of people and sometimes, info is not accurate. Please let me clarify two things. 1.) Many of us were led to believe that bats lived in the towers but the pigeons were actually the ones that were there and 2.) The museum was originally a laundromat. There was another building (looked like our museum) nearby and it had horse stalls. If you see the picture of the building, you will understand why we got confused with two similar buildings.

I understand that I have no control over how the video was edited. I think it is critical to emphasize that the TSD museum is strictly run by TSD Alumni. The group of alumni gets together once or twice on a weekly basis to go through archives and collections and they also ensure that the museum is well-kept. The museum has visiting hours posted and anyone is welcome. Please contact heritage.center@tsd.state.tx.us if you would like to visit the museum here at TSD.

Thank you very much and keep up the great work!
    Avonne
